Start quizWhy ADR matters for UK HGV drivers
If you carry dangerous goods above exemption thresholds on UK or international road journeys, you need an ADR Driver Training Certificate (DTC) from a DVSA-approved centre — on top of your vocational licence and Driver CPC where applicable.
- Scope — ADR applies when carriage falls under the Agreement (UK is a Contracting Party). Domestic UK rules implement the same Annex A/B framework.
- Responsibilities — Drivers must understand placards, transport documents, emergency procedures, tunnel restrictions and vehicle equipment (ADR Part 8).
- Renewal — Refresher training every 5 years to keep the DTC valid (initial + specialist modules as needed).
- Specialisations — Core for all; add Tank for tankers; Class 1 for explosives; Class 7 for radioactive.
