UK ADR exam & refresher — what HGV drivers need

Initial vs refresher

• Initial training — First ADR qualification. Includes Core module plus any specialisations you need (Tank, Class 1, Class 7).
• Refresher training — Required within 5 years of previous DTC issue to remain valid. Re-take the modules you hold — syllabus updated to current ADR edition.
• Expired certificate — Treat as new initial training if lapsed beyond allowed grace (check centre policy).

Training modules (UK “classes” programme)

What to expect in training & assessment

• Classroom tuition — Hazard classes, documentation, placarding, load segregation, emergency actions, tunnel restrictions.
• Written test — Multiple-choice papers per module (centre sets pass mark — typically high percentage).
• Practical awareness — Some centres include equipment checks, document scenarios or vehicle walk-around.
• DVSA-approved centres only — Certificate issued on successful completion; keep copy in cab or produce on request.

Driver CPC & professional HGV

ADR DTC is separate from Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC). Professional drivers need both where applicable:

• CPC — 35 hours periodic training every 5 years (different syllabus).
• ADR — Dangerous goods competence; employer may require specific modules for your work (e.g. fuel tanker = Core + Tank).

1. Transport document fields and order (5.4.1) — UN, PSN, class, PG, quantity, tunnel code.
2. Tunnel restriction codes and categories A–E (8.6).
3. Placarding thresholds — packages vs tanks (5.2 / 5.3).
4. Instructions in writing — when and what they contain (5.4.3).
5. Fire extinguisher minimums and PPE on board (8.1.4–8.1.5).
6. Mixed loading prohibitions (7.5.2).
